BOB MURPHY – BIG STAR

Big Star – #1 Record (1972)

big-star-right-size

It’s been said before I’m sure, but one of the great things about owning a record player is how it slows down the speed of life. It’s a bit like driving an old car; the vinyl bench seat across the front and the column shift on the wheel, the motor must warm up properly before the journey begins. Driving this kind of vehicle takes time, patience and care. There’s a certain mood that comes with this, a calmness. It is the same with a record player. It’s not an inconvenience to sort through the vinyl albums displayed on my lounge room shelf and then carefully extricate the blackened wax from the sleeve, it’s a prayer.…

BOB MURPHY – HEARTBREAKER…

Ryan Adams – Heartbreaker (2000)

Heartbreaker

I remember being at an under age disco around ’97 in my hometown of Warragul and the ‘Rage Against The Machine’ song ‘Killing in the Name Of’ came on. Every kid in the scout hall shouted the words back at the speakers as one with their fists in the air. They really meant it. It was the time of grunge and teen angst. Only problem was, I didn’t have any. I liked my parents, I was happy enough at school and if I had’ve been in charge of the set list at the “Underage Rage” I probably would’ve played the hits of Van Morrison, the Beach Boys and Joe Cocker.…

BOB MURPHY – CHAMPAGNE SUPERNOVA…

OasisBobWe are quite delighted to throw the spotlight on to our fourth Vinylist for The Vinyl Series, Mr Bob Murphy. When we were thinking of people we’d love to contribute to this series, there were a few strict criteria we had in mind:

1)   MUST have played over 250 games for the Western Bulldogs and be a champion of the club.

2)   MUST have a regular weekly column in The Age.

3)   MUST appear on a specialist football show at least once per week, preferably on a Tuesday night.

4)   MUST have a strong love of music and own record player.

GOOD TASTE ROUND…

MerrettMurphy

Tonight’s game between the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium is notable for the fact that it features two men with the best musical tastes* currently running around in the AFL: Bob Murphy & Daniel Merrett . Regardless of the result tonight, we’re looking at it as a small victory for players who don’t list Avicii or Robin Thicke as their current favourite artists. For all your alt-country needs you’d be heading straight to Bob, for an update on the best current releases and next big things, Dan Merrett is your man. Like Natalie Imbruglia, we’ll be a little torn watching tonight (we’ll also be standing an all-white room leaning forlornly against walls as sheer curtains flap about in the background) and wishing both of them all the very best.…

TOP 5 PRESENTATION NIGHT # 1 MOMENTS

FLPKRM3Online lists are big aren’t they? In the modern age where we have so many pressing things to do – such as reading lists online – we are not above getting involved in this kind of thing. Ahead of revealing the line-up for our next show this coming Friday, here are some sweet memories from our first Presentation Night show in July last year starring Paul Kelly, Bob Murphy and our very own Francis Leach.

1. Francis walks on stage to the strains of ‘This Charming Man’ to a rousing reception– the exact point at which it seemed like a show where people talk about music and footy was probably going to work out just like the fantasy sequence we’d been imagining in our heads.…

BORN TO RUN…

Bob_webThis weekend, Bob Murphy plays his 250th game for Bulldogs, and we’re excited: for him, for footy, for his family, his team, for one of the good guys. If you like football, music and humans, you like Bob.

It’s a funny thing to say about someone about to reach a major milestone in professional sport, but sometimes it’s easy to forget just how good he is. In between his excellent weekly column for The Age, his appearances on AFL360 and his general upstanding good-guy-ness, it’s easy to overlook the fact that he also dabbles in a bit of elite football playing on the side.…
