WRITE THE THEME TUNE, SING THE THEME TUNE…

UglyDaveBannerWith a new football season mere days away, the anticipation that swells inside all of us at the thought of our own teams’ inevitable and glorious victories are hard to suppress. Sure, we’re cautiously optimistic and well aware that there will be some tough games ahead, but in the gentle pre-dawn light of possibility that characterises every seasons’ beginnings, somehow we just KNOW that our beloved 22 man bands will end most of their games linking arms to belt out our club song. We’ll join them from the stands, from the lounge room or the pub. Along with our heroes, we’ll figuratively shower the first-gamers with energy drinks, playfully ruffle our teammates’ hair and humorously raise our eyebrows at the camera.…

DENNIS COMETTI & DAVE GRANEY…

PNScreen Shot 2015-06-17 at 6.44.30 PMWe’re absolutely delighted to announce today that our next live show is the stuff of footballing and musical dreams. Commentary colossus Dennis Cometti joins rock and roll’s cosmic boundary rider, Dave Graney at  The Corner Hotel in Richmond on Sunday the 16th of August for our next evening of footballing and musical conversation. The thought of this maverick combo on stage has always tickled our fancy, and we’re excited, delighted, and stoked that the fancy is finally being tickled. With two such unique and enormous talents together on stage it’s going to be a conversation for the ages.

As always, the night will be hosted by our very own Francis Leach, and we can’t wait.…

Screen Shot 2015-06-05 at 5.54.41 PM

We’re REALLY excited to have locked in a new colossal footy and musical pairing for our next live show coming up in August. It’s been two years in the making, and by golly it’s going to be good. We’ll announce all details in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, let’s just stare at the dreamboat parade of our past Hall of Famers in poster form.

THE FAIRY TALE…

SSGFOne of the many great things about sport is its ability to produce fairy tale endings. It’s fair to say that this weekend’s victory by South Sydney over the Bulldogs in the NRL Grand Final fitted very comfortably into this category. 43 years of wishing and waiting finally came good for the Rabbitoh faithful as the cardinal and myrtle ran over the top of the plucky but never-quite-up- to-it Bulldogs.

The day before the Grand Final, Danny Allen gave us his fantastic reflection on what his team, South Sydney, means to him. I’ve known Dan for nearly twenty years, and it was on a whim that I asked if he’d like to write something about the Grand Final for that ‘other code’ for the site.…

SOUTH SIDE STORY…

DannyBunny

We’ve never previously tipped our hat in rugby league’s direction at Presentation Night, but living in Sydney in the lead up to to the NRL Grand Final what we love about the caper is that it ignites exactly the same type of passion that those of us of an ‘Aussie Rules’ persuasion know so well. With South Sydney taking on the Canterbury Bulldogs in their first Grand Final since 1971 this weekend, my thoughts turn to the pure unadulterated joy that one of the finest men I’ve ever had the pleasure to know, Mr. Daniel Lee Allen, must be feeling. He’s the handsome fella with the South Sydney tattoo in the picture to the left.

DUFFLE COATS AND DREAMS…

Schimma

As a North Melbourne-mad youngster growing up in Brandon Park, Matt Davis bought his sporting apparel directly from Leigh Matthews and wore Schimma’s name proudly on the back of his duffle coat. Matt is what you what might call a Renaissance Man. He played on the junior Satellite Tour as an aspiring young tennis pro. He formed one of our favourite Australian bands of all time, Gersey. He currently lives in Paris composing film scores and playing with his new band The Wonder. He also has a novel written. Yes, he’s quite the achiever, and a dear friend.  This is his story…

In the late 1970s, when Leigh Matthews wasn’t breaking goal posts or opposition players’ jaws as a Hawthorn hardman, he ran a small sports store just down the road from our house he cleverly named Leigh Matthews’ Sporting Goods.…

THE PLAYER…

CommCup

Our embedded reporter, Youth Group front man and classy midfielder Toby Martin  (pictured far left, flowing locks, moustache) played in his first Sydney Community Cup on the weekend just gone. Here are his impressions of one of the great days in the Sydney sporting/musical calendar…

The Community Cup is an annual women and men’s footy match between the Western Walers (musicians, managers, record label folk) and the Sydney Sailors (music media types). It is a charity event to raise money for Reclink who rehabilitate needy people through sport and art. It has been running in Melbourne for 20 years and has become a cult event.…

SYDNEY: SCREAMERS, BURGERS, POETRY…

Screamer

As you can see from the picture accompanying this post, our show last night at the Vic on the Park was an absolute screamer. Thankyou Sydney people for coming out with clear eyes and full hearts – we could never lose. There was a lot of love in the room, and that’s exactly how we like it. A successful Presentation Night all comes down to the people on stage opening up about their lives in and outside of football and music, and the people in the room – that’s us – wanting to come along for the ride. Jude Bolton and Urthboy treated everyone in the room to an absolute masterclass in humility, humour, intelligence and story telling.…

THE BARASSI LINE…

CWfootycard

Clinton Walker is one of our favourite Australian writers, so it’s no exaggeration to say that it’s an honour to welcome him into the Presentation Night fold. Clinton has written about Australian music and culture with style and heart since the late seventies, and has published many fantastic tomes covering Australian underground music, culture, motoring and more. In short, everything he’s done is right in the Presentation Night (forward) pocket. Our personal favourites of Clinton’s published works include ‘Inner City Sound‘, ‘Golden Miles‘, ‘Stranded‘, ‘Buried Country‘, and this amazing piece, ‘Life Coaches‘-  and these are just barely scratching the surface.…
